Bernera Barracks ( ruin ) at Glenelg, built for General Wade`s soldiers prior to the Highland Clearances in the early 1800s Sandaig by Glenelg is associated with the author Gavin Maxwell, ( " Ring of Bright Water " ) who latterly lived on the small island, Eilean Ban, just off Kyleakin. The visitors centre there provides boat trips to see otters, seals and other wildlife.
The whole area around Loch Duich is a wildlife haven and during your stay you may well see red deer, otters, pine martens, golden eagle, seals, herons etc. Thoroughly recommended for keen birdwatchers.
Plockton is a beautiful coastal village where boat trips can be arranged to view the wildlife.
There is a wide range of hotels, pubs and restaurants in the local area providing a good selection of menus using local produce in most cases.
